SUN PROTECTION
Most people know about the benefits of sunscreen (it should be reapplied every two hours when you’re swimming!), but did you know you can choose a leave-in conditioner with UV protection to help shield your hair and scalp from the sun’s rays?
Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV rays and glare, especially at the pool. But be careful, Shakira warns. “One time I went to the beach and I had my sunglasses on my forehead. It was the worse sunburn,” she said. “I still, to this day, think my forehead is darker than the rest of my face.”
A wise word from Stef: Don’t forget the lip moisturizer.
“Chapstick is important because if my lips get burnt, it's not a good day for me,” she said.
HYDRATION
Despite what you might hope, sipping cocktails at the swim-up bar doesn’t count toward your hydration goals. Be sure to drink plenty of water.
Moisturize your skin and hair well before exposing it to the sun. Both Stef and Shakira like to use a leave-in conditioner before and after hitting the water.
Once the fabled hangout of Hollywood stars like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr., the Vagabond Hotel today features a palm-tree-lined pool with vibrant retro decor, and a mix of old-school Miami glamour with contemporary touches.
For people who prefer a relaxed, intimate poolside retreat over the buzz of South Beach, the Vagabond Hotel is a must-visit.
Whether you’re dreaming of summer or chasing the sun, check out these tips from Shakira, Stef, and Aaliyah on protecting your hair and skin before and after a day outdoors.
With winter holding a strong lead heading into the final quarter, poolside lounging may feel like a distant dream in the District. But for the Mystics in Miami, it’s summer year-round, and they’re soaking up every moment they can.
A few players recently took a much-needed day of rest and relaxation at the iconic Vagabond Hotel, a hidden gem nestled in Miami’s MiMo District.
DON'T FORGET TO REST
As much fun as it is, a day in the sun can zap the energy from our bodies. Take time to rest and rebuild your energy stores when you get home.
“After I take a shower, I go in with shea butter to give my skin some moisture and then I usually take a nap because the sun has beat me up,” Shakira said.

WASH AND MOISTURIZE YOUR HAIR AND SKIN AFTERWARDS
Shower with fresh water to get pool chemicals or salt water out of your hair.
Due to its salt content, ocean water can be a natural texturizer and curl booster for your locks. Stef uses a spray mouse to enhance her natural curls after a day at the beach.
Saltwater also offers natural exfoliation for skin and scalp. Shakira said she loves how soft her skin feels after a dip in the ocean.
